Developing Scholarships For HBCU Students (8563 hits)

One of the reasons that we decided to launch an HBCU alumni cruise was to potentially raise some money to give back to the HBCU students in the form of scholarships. We usually give out scholarships twice a year (Summer and Fall), but we have also been known to add an additional scholarship in the Winter during Black History Month. The fund-raising amount is usually included within the cost of the cruise, which is normally $100 (which is roughly $8/month).

We have also teamed up with The HBCU Foundation in order to better leverage our position of raising funds for scholarships. This union allows us to become a resource and provide funds to The HBCU Foundation which in turn disburses several scholarships to deserving HBCU students around the nation.

Our scholarship is open to incoming HBCU freshmen and current students at an HBCU. There is no minimum GPA requirement. We only ask that applicants sign up to HBCUConnect.com (which is free), attend or currently attend an HBCU, and to answer a question or write a response to a statement in essay form. There is usually a word count limit on essay submissions as well as specific deadlines which must be met in order to qualify for the scholarship.

In some cases, we may select the Top 5 or 10 essays and then post them on HBCUConnect.com to be voted on via the members of the site, with the awardee being the one with the most votes. In other cases, we will select an awardee in-house and notify the winner via e-mail or phone.

The more funds we raise, the more scholarships we can offer or larger amounts we can offer per scholarship.
